Assisted Voluntary Return from Detention (AVRD)

Irregular migrants can be detained by the Dutch authorities, based on the intention to organize their forced removal to the country of origin.

IOM aims to be available to as many migrants as possible with her program for Assisted Voluntary Return (AVR). IOM also wants to give migrants in detention the possibility to make use of the assistance IOM offers. Therefore, IOM is present in several detention centres. IOM assists for example with acquiring a travel document, arranges and pays the ticket, provides medical assistance if needed and in some cases gives financial support.

The working method and services provided by IOM are based on 5 year experience in this particular field of work.

AVRD project

The project Assisted Voluntary Return form Detention (AVRD) provides information meetings about the assistance and the support services at the different locations of alien detention centre. Those meetings are organized as group sessions once or twice a week on location.

The objectives of the project are a possible contribution to an integral return policy through:

  • Broadening of the reach of the assistance
  • Reinforcement of the quality of the provided services
  • Harmonizing the process of mediation for obtaining travel documents for an individual in alien detention
  • An international exchange of the "good practices" regarding the return from alien detention
