The last few months prior to his return to Morocco he suffered from mental problems too besides his chronic physical problems. He barely left his home.
Because Mr. Y. has a medical indication for which he needs
permanent expensive medical care, he was eligible to receive
reintegration assistance, specifically aimed at this category of
migrants. He started to consider the option of return more
seriously.
Once back in Nador Mr. Y. worked out his plan to start up a grocery store. He had gained some experience in this trade in the Netherlands. In close cooperation with the IOM-office in Nador the plan was soon carried out. Licenses were obtained, a location for the shop found and products stocked.
To be able to finance the initial stage of his plan Mr. Y. needed
an additional source of money besides IOM. Fortunately he could
borrow some money from his family.
The main challenge Mr. Y. faces is to make his shop well known enough in the neighborhood.
The supply of products in his shop is restricted so far, but he has some ideas to be better than his competitors. He’d like to sell gas bottles and prepaid phone cards in the near future.
These products are in short supply in the neighborhood till this
day.
Mr. Y. admits it’s not easy to pick up the pieces in Morocco. He doesn’t know much people there anymore. It bothers him too he’s back sick and without much resources for his family. He had wished to come home with a fortune.
Yet he’s positive about the future. He really wants to be his
grocery shop a success. He’s thankful he has a clear goal in his
life again.
