Bangladesh, Madaripur – motorcycle taxi

Mr. S. stayed in the Netherlands for seven years, before he decided to return to Bangladesh. In the Wereldhuis in Amsterdam he met one of the IOM native counsellors, who told him about the possibility of starting up a micro business. He was very eager to this help and once back in Bangladesh he bought a motorcycle taxi.

Mr. S. decided to return because it became increasingly difficult as an undocumented migrant to make money in the Netherlands, or elsewhere in Europe. Perhaps just enough if he were alone, but not enough to meet the needs and expectations of his family. Just like many other  migrants, a large proportion of his income goes to relatives in the country of origin. This causes extra pressure.

With the help of an officer of the IOM office in Dhaka, he worked out a plan to begin a motorcycle taxi business. Given the popularity of a motorcycle taxi at his final destination Madaripur, this activity is a relatively secure source of income. With money from the IOM office in the Netherlands, mr. S. bought a motorcycle taxi. The main challenge will be to keep the taxi damage free, given the high number of road accidents in the region. Mr. S. intends to do a second investment in the future. He would like to start a shop. He might then hire out his taxi.
