Iglal comes from Sudan where she took a Bachelor’s degree in chemistry. Her employer at that time, the Ministry of Higher Education, then financed her Master’s in human ecology, which she took in Brussels. She took a second Master’s degree in Delft in environmental science and technology. In spite of her degrees it is difficult for her to find a suitable job in the Netherlands. Thanks to the IOM, she can use her specialist knowledge and in her country of origin, too.
“From October 2008 up to April 2009, I worked in Sudan through the intermediary of the IOM. In my case, it was in a research centre for hydraulic engineering. I could use my knowledge for a wide range of duties there, including as a research worker, consultant and teacher. I thus gave several courses of lectures to people from universities, ministries and water companies and compiled the study material myself. I also trained laboratory workers how to use instruments.”
Iglal can’t wait to go back to Sudan in a couple of weeks. She is going to work for the same organization for three months. Her family is going with her, because her husband will also be put on a project temporarily. Iglal: “IOM gives me the opportunity to work at my professional development: the key to a better future in Sudan.”
