“I want to do what I can to improve the situation”

Mr Roshangar came from Afghanistan to the Netherlands in 2000. In May 2009 he returned for three months to his native country to coach young law teachers at the university of Herat. His assistance was exactly what they needed. ‘In the last few years many things have been built up in Afghanistan. But still the problems have not been solved by far.’

In Afghanistan Mr Roshangar worked as a law professor for many years. But his diplomas are not valid in the Netherlands, as a result of which he cannot exercise his function here. Via IOM he participated in the TRQN project, which offered him a chance to use his expertise in his country of origin.

It was an intensive time during which Mr Roshangar has been able to mean a lot for the university. Mr Roshangar: ‘The teachers at the law faculty are all still young and have a low academic rank. I gave lectures on academic standards and values and trained the teachers individually. I also attended their lessons to check the teaching procedures.’ Although this was already a full day's work as such, this was not all. ‘For a number of subjects there were still vacancies. Ultimately I decided to give these subjects myself. With books from the library I was preparing the lectures till late in the evening. Fortunately I received many enthusiastic reactions afterwards.’

The project was a great success for both Mr Roshangar and the university of Herat The director was even so enthusiastic about him that he has approached IOM for a follow-up project with Mr Roshangar. Therefore he will soon leave again for Herat for three months. ‘Herat is the region where I was born and bred. I want to do everything I can to improve the situation there.’
