Diaspora organizations worldwide are playing an increasingly important role in the development of home countries. For many developing countries remittances are now larger than the funds received through foreign portfolio investment or official development assistance. These large sums of money have the potential to contribute significantly to origin countries’ economic development. According to Bank Indonesia, remittance flows to Indonesia reached USD 6.6 billion in 2008. In Indonesia remittances are mainly used to finance daily living needs, health services, education, to service debts as well as to acquire land and property. Read more

The IOM Independent Network of labour Migration and Integration Experts (LINET) was created in 2009 by IOM in order to provide DG employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities of the European Commission with expert analysis and advice on economic migration and labour market integration of third countries nationals. The network unites experts from 27 Member States of the European Union, Croatia, Norway and Turkey, and aims to support the European Commission in evidence-based decision-making and mainstreaming issues of laour market integration of migrants in achieving Europe's 2020 goals. In 2010 a research study was conducted by IOM in the 27 EU countries plus Croatia, Norway and Turkey about migration, employment and labour market integration policies.
