Persbericht: 26 november 2010
IOM’s 99th Council: nieuwe leden en publicatie World Migration Report

The four-day session of IOM’s governing body will open with the Kingdom of Lesotho, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, the Republic of Botswana and the Kingdom of Swaziland joining as new member States, bringing IOM’s membership to 132. The International Institute of Humanitarian Law (IIHL) and the Federation of Christian Organizations for International Volunteer Service (FOCSIV-Volontari nel Mondo) and the Scalabrini International Migration Network (SIMN) will join as observers.

This will be followed by a keynote address by the European Commissioner for Home Affairs Cecilia Malmström ahead of the launch of IOM’s 2010 World Migration Report, “The Future of Migration: Building Capacities for Change”.

This year’s flagship publication argues that in a world where demographics, economic needs and the effects of environmental change are driving the inexorable rise in numbers of international migrants, governments and non-state actors have little choice but to invest adequate financial and human resources to ensure States, societies and migrants reap the full potential of future migration.

An interactive dialogue with the members of the Global Migration Group (GMG) will take place on 1st December. The outgoing chair of the GMG, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navanethem Pillay and other members of the Group will discuss the Group’s priority areas of work.

This year’s International Dialogue on Migration (IDM) will open on 2 December. It will examine how migration can positively drive social change and development at all levels.

Keynote speakers will include Sandrine Salerno, Mayor of the City of Geneva, Seyed Taghi Ghaemi, Advisor to the Minister of Interior, Islamic Republic of Iran, Sakir Fakili, Director of Consular Affairs. Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Turkey and Alfredo Camelo from the Cross-Cultural Studies Centre for Migrants, Geneva.
